Sleep Robbers - Avoid them!

Monday, January 17, 2011

I've been working in the call center industry for nearly more than 7 years now and yet I have not mastered the art of sleeping. I think my biological clock is non-existent at times. There were some instances when I try to sleep but I simply just couldn't even though I've been awake for almost 24 hours.

I don't really think sleeping pills are the answer. I've taken most sleeping pills - from the mild herbal ones to the strong prescription medications. They work but you're in danger of becoming dependent on them.

Now what's the problem?

What I learned from a Yahoo! article is that I need to avoid the following if I want to have a restful sleep:

* Caffeine - This is a bit weird for me. Coffee actually makes me sleepy. No, I'm not kidding. Tea works better for me. However, I forgot that most sodas have caffeine too. One thing I should avoid before bedtime (or avoid at all times) is cola.

* Spicy Foods - I'm really not a big fan of spicy foods but once in while I may give in. Those prone to heartburn better be careful though because spicy food may even make the symptoms worse when lying down.

* Processed meats - I did not know that processed meats contain Tyramine, which makes the brain release a chemical that keeps you alert. That means no Jollibee or McDonalds before you sleep!

* Milk Chocolate and Ginseng Tea - Milk, according to some people, induces sleep but NOT milk chocolate. Some teas can also help but not Ginseng tea. Both are known stimulants as they also contain a chemical that makes the brain alert.
